Car battery questions answered

Is $300 too much for a car battery?

It depends on the battery type and who fits it. For a basic flooded battery in an ordinary car, $300 is high: Walmart and Costco batteries run about $80 to $190, and standard lead-acid batteries at parts chains about $90 to $225. For an AGM or EFB battery, which start-stop cars need, $300 is a normal price, because AGM batteries run about $230 to $450 or more. $300 is also reasonable if it includes fitting, testing and recycling, as with an independent shop or a mobile service. Ask for the battery, labour, fees and warranty separately.

Is $500 too much for a car battery?

For most cars, yes. $500 is above the usual range for a standard battery and at the top of the range for AGM. It can be fair for a large AGM battery, a premium brand, or a car that needs battery registration or has the battery in the boot or under a seat. Dealers are often quoted at about $250 to $500 installed, so $500 is the ceiling to expect, not the norm. Get a second quote from a parts chain or independent shop before you pay it.

Is $200 for a car battery good?

Yes, $200 is a fair price for most cars. It buys a good flooded battery or an entry-level AGM, and it sits inside the ranges we see at Walmart, Costco and parts chains. Before you buy, check that the group size and cold cranking amps match your car, look for a warranty of at least three years, and ask whether fitting is free and whether you get a core refund for the old battery.

How much does it cost to replace a car battery?

A typical shop-level replacement is about $423 to $460 in total in a RepairPal estimate, roughly $364 to $374 for the battery and $59 to $86 for labour. You can pay much less. A battery alone is about $80 to $190 at Walmart or a warehouse club, and many parts stores fit it free. Independent shops add about $40 to $75 for labour, dealers are quoted at about $250 to $500 installed, and mobile services at about $150 to $350 including the call-out. AGM batteries and cars that need battery registration cost more. Use the calculator on our home page for your own total.

Is a 7 year old car battery still good?

It might still start your car, but it is past its likely life. Most car batteries last about 3 to 5 years, and a few reach 6 to 7 in mild climates. At 7 years the plates are worn, and the battery can fail suddenly, especially on a cold morning. Test it now with a voltmeter or a free load test at a parts store. If it is weak, or you are about to head into winter or a long trip, replace it before it strands you.

What is the price of a car battery at Costco?

Costco car batteries are about $90 to $180, according to a third-party guide, and they are Interstate batteries. Expect a core charge of about $15, refunded when you return the old battery, and a 36-month prorated warranty. Costco does not install batteries, so you need to fit it yourself or pay a shop. Prices and stock vary by warehouse, so confirm on costco.com or in store.

What are signs of a dying car battery?

Common signs are slow or sluggish cranking, a clicking sound when you turn the key, dim headlights and interior lights, a battery or check-engine warning light, and electronics that reset or glitch. You may also see a swollen battery case, white or blue corrosion on the terminals, or smell rotten eggs, which means the battery is leaking and should be handled with care. Needing a jump start more than once, or a battery older than 4 years, are further warnings. A voltage reading below about 12.4V with the engine off is also a flag.

Do car batteries give warning before dying?

Often, but not always. Many batteries show slow cranking, dim lights or a need for repeated jump starts for weeks before they fail. Others fail without warning because of an internal short, a broken plate, or heat damage, and hot summers are a common cause. Do not rely on warning signs alone. After the third year, test the battery every year, and replace it if it tests weak.

Why do car batteries only last 2 years?

A battery that dies in about two years is usually being worn down by its conditions, not just by age. The main causes are extreme heat, repeated short trips that never recharge it, a parasitic drain that runs it down while parked, a failing alternator, loose or corroded terminals, and a loose hold-down clamp that lets the battery vibrate. Start-stop and feature-heavy cars also demand more from the battery. An old battery from stock can also be partly worn when you buy it, so check the date code. If it keeps happening, have the charging system and parasitic drain tested, because the battery may not be the real problem.

Can a car battery last 20 years?

No, not an ordinary 12V car battery. Lead-acid batteries in cars normally last 3 to 5 years and rarely pass 7. Heat, vibration and the daily charge-and-discharge cycle wear them out long before 20 years. Stationary backup batteries on a constant float charge can last far longer, and some lithium batteries have long lives, but those are different products. If someone claims a 20-year-old car battery still works, it is almost certainly an exception and unreliable.

Is a 20 minute drive enough to charge a car battery?

For a healthy battery that has only started the car, yes, because the alternator replaces the energy used in starting within a few minutes. It is not enough to fully recharge a battery that is flat or was jump-started. That usually needs 30 minutes or more at steady speed, ideally with the lights, heater and other loads off, and a short stop-and-go drive adds very little. For a deeply discharged battery, a smart charger is more reliable. If the car will not start again the next day, test the battery and the alternator.

How do I bring a dead car battery back to life?

Start by working out why it died. If you left the lights on, you can usually recover it. Clean the terminals, jump-start the car or use a portable jump starter, then drive for 30 minutes or more or put a smart charger on it for several hours. If the battery is old, will not hold a charge, has a swollen case or is leaking, replacing it is the safe choice, because a battery that has gone flat several times or sat discharged for weeks is often sulfated beyond repair. Never charge a frozen or damaged battery, and keep sparks and flames away from it.

What is the best car battery brand?

No single brand is best for every car. Premium AGM brands such as Optima, Odyssey and Bosch have strong reputations, and store brands like Interstate, DieHard, Duralast and EverStart are popular value choices. Many of these are made by a small number of manufacturers, so the specification, freshness and warranty matter more than the logo. Pick the correct group size, cold cranking amps and battery type for your car, choose AGM or EFB if it has start-stop, check the date code for freshness, and look for a warranty of at least three years. Our group size finder and the AGM vs EFB vs flooded guide help you narrow it down.

What is the scrap value of a 150Ah battery?

A 150Ah lead-acid battery weighs roughly 40 to 50 kg, and scrap dealers pay by weight at the current lead price. Multiply the battery weight in kg by the dealer's rate per kg. Recent yard rates for United States are about $0.37 to $0.53 per kg, so a 45 kg battery fetches roughly $17 to $24. Rates change weekly and between dealers, so ask two or three. Returning the old battery to the seller often gets you an exchange discount or a refunded core charge that can beat the scrap price.

How do I calculate petrol cost per km?

Divide the fuel price per litre by your car's mileage in km per litre. Cost per km = price per litre ÷ km per litre. For example, at $1.20 per litre and 12 km per litre, you pay about $0.10 per km. If you know consumption in litres per 100 km instead, cost per km = (litres per 100 km × price per litre) ÷ 100. In miles per gallon, divide the price per gallon by your mpg to get the cost per mile.

How do I calculate pro-rata for a battery?

Pro-rata means you are credited for the unused part of the warranty. Pro-rata credit = original price × (months remaining ÷ total warranty months). For example (a hypothetical price), a 60-month warranty battery bought for $180 that fails at month 40 has 20 months left, so the credit is $180 × 20 ÷ 60 = about $60 off a new battery. Free-replacement periods usually come first, and pro-rata only applies after them. Our warranty calculator does the sum for you.

Should a 7-year-old car battery be replaced?

Usually yes. Most car batteries last about 3 to 5 years, and heat, short trips and start-stop use shorten that. A battery that reaches 7 years is living on borrowed time and can fail without warning, so replace it, especially before winter or a long trip. If it still tests healthy, keep it but test it every few months and carry a jump starter.

How much petrol is required for 500 km in a car?

Litres needed = distance ÷ mileage. At 12 km per litre, 500 km needs about 41.7 litres, which costs about $50.00 at $1.20 per litre. At 10 km per litre it is about 50 litres, and at 16 km per litre about 31.3 litres. Add 10 to 15 percent for heavy traffic or air conditioning.

How much does 70 km of petrol cost?

Cost = (70 ÷ km per litre) × price per litre. At 12 km per litre and $1.20 per litre, 70 km uses about 5.83 litres and costs about $7.00. Swap in your own mileage and local fuel price for an accurate figure.

What kills car batteries quickly?

The usual causes are extreme heat, repeated short trips that never fully recharge the battery, leaving lights or electronics on, long periods parked, loose or corroded terminals, a failing alternator that over- or under-charges, heavy accessories such as aftermarket audio, and deep discharges. Vibration from a loose hold-down clamp also damages the plates. Letting a battery sit flat for days causes sulfation, which can ruin it permanently.

Can a dead car battery be recharged?

Often yes. A battery that is merely flat, for example from leaving the lights on, can usually be recharged with a smart charger over several hours or by driving for 30 minutes or more. A battery that is old, deeply sulfated, has a shorted cell or will not hold a charge needs replacing. If it goes flat again within a day or two after charging, replace it and check the alternator.

How do I check car battery health?

With the engine off, measure the voltage across the terminals using a multimeter. About 12.6V or more is fully charged, around 12.4V is about 75 percent, and 12.0V or less is badly discharged. With the engine running, 13.7V to 14.7V shows the alternator is charging. Slow cranking, dim lights, a swollen case and a battery older than 4 years are warning signs. A shop load test is the most reliable check, and our voltage checker explains your reading.

How do I wake up a dead car battery?

Try these in order. First, clean any corrosion off the terminals and tighten the clamps. Second, jump-start the car using jumper cables from a running car, or use a portable jump starter. Third, once the engine runs, drive for 30 minutes or more, or connect a smart charger, to restore charge. Connect red to positive first and finish with black on bare metal away from the battery. If a battery will not respond to any of this, it is probably at the end of its life.

How do I renew car battery life?

You cannot truly restore a worn-out battery, but you can recover some capacity if it is only sulfated or undercharged. Clean the terminals, top up distilled water in a serviceable flooded battery so the plates are covered, and give it a slow full charge with a smart charger that has a repair or desulfation mode. To extend life, avoid very short trips, switch off accessories before shutting the engine, keep it secure and clean, and use a maintainer if the car sits unused. If it still tests weak afterwards, replace it.
