How long to charge?

On the battery label. If you only see reserve capacity or CCA, check the maker's spec.

Unsure? Use the voltage checker.

Check your charger supports your type. The formula is the same.

Enter capacity and charger amps.

How to use this tool

  1. 1. Enter battery capacity

    Amp-hours (Ah) from the label.

  2. 2. Set the charge level

Percent charged now, or use the voltage checker.

  3. 3. Enter charger amps

    The charger's output current.

  4. 4. Read the time

    Plus the formula we used.

The Formula

hours ≈ Ah × (1 − charge) ÷ charger amps × 1.2. For a 50 Ah battery at 50% on a 5 A charger: 50 × 0.5 ÷ 5 × 1.2 = 6 hours. Real charging slows near full, so treat this as an estimate and let a smart charger finish the job. Safety: ventilate, keep sparks and flames away, and follow your charger's manual.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to charge a car battery?

It depends on capacity, how flat it is and the charger amps. Use the calculator: hours ≈ Ah × (1 − charge) ÷ amps × 1.2.

Why multiply by 1.2?

Charging is not 100% efficient. The 1.2 factor allows for losses, as a rule of thumb.

Can I charge a car battery in the car?

Often yes with a suitable maintainer, but follow your manual, especially on start-stop, hybrid and EV cars. Charge in a ventilated space and keep sparks away.
