Cheapest Electric Car Battery Replacement Cost: Which Models?

Of the models we can source today, Tesla Model 3 Standard Range / SR+ (2017-2023) has the lowest starting price at $10,500. That is a short list, so this is not a verdict on the whole market. We will widen it as each model's data is checked, and we will not guess in the meantime.

How the Custom Pack Size Estimate Works

If your model is not listed, enter the pack size in kWh. We multiply it by an installed dollars-per-kWh range derived only from the sourced models above, currently about $153 to $264 per kWh. We never use battery pack prices as your retail rate. BloombergNEF reports an average lithium-ion pack price of $108 per kWh and $99 for EV packs. That is what manufacturers pay for cells and packs in volume, not what a customer pays for a replacement with labour, margin and diagnostics. It is useful context for why prices are falling, nothing more.

Repair, Refurbish or Replace?

A full new pack is rarely the only choice. Many failures are a few bad modules, which independent EV specialists can repair for far less. See our Tesla battery replacement cost page for repair and refurbished ranges, and the EV battery health guide before you accept a quote. Toyota drivers can see Toyota electric car battery replacement cost for hybrid and EV warranty terms.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace an electric car battery?

For the models we have sourced data on, a new pack installed out of warranty runs $10,500 to $19,000 (Tesla Model 3 variants). We are still researching other models, so we only show what we can source.

Are EV batteries covered by warranty?

Yes, almost always for a number of years and miles. Tesla covers the Model 3 battery for 8 years and 100,000 miles (Standard Range and RWD) or 120,000 miles (Long Range and Performance), with a 70% minimum capacity. Enter your age and mileage above to check. Verify on tesla.com.

How long do electric car batteries last?

Most are designed to outlast the warranty period, and capacity fades gradually rather than failing suddenly. Our guide on EV battery health explains what degradation looks like. Many owners never replace the pack.

Can an EV battery be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. For Tesla, module or component repairs are quoted around $3,000 to $8,000, and independent refurbished packs about $8,000 to $10,000, compared with a new pack at $10,500 to $19,000.

Which electric car has the cheapest battery replacement?

Among the models we have sourced data for, Model 3 Standard Range / SR+ (2017-2023) has the lowest installed range at $10,500 to $14,500. This is a short list: we are adding more models as we verify them.

Do EVs also have a 12V battery?

Yes. Most EVs and hybrids keep a conventional 12V battery that runs electronics and wakes the car. It is replaced like any car battery. Our home page calculator covers it.
